Are you responsible for regular updates regarding how long there is till the New Year?    YES / NO

If yes then chose opportune moments to announce “30 minutes to the bells” etc.

As you get closer to the bells then announce more updates

If you are working with a band this still may be required – ask the band if they want you to do this – it actually does work well and shows that the BAND AND DISCO ARE WORKING TOGETHER

If you responsible for the announcement of the New Year then New Year happens when you hit the button – try to have an accurate time and give a countdown

If you are using the new year video this should start exactly 10 minutes before the New Year

Prepare the music for the event – don’t just presume it is OK

Check if the venue is using a confetti cannon or dropping balloons - avoid taking responsibility for this as you need to focus on your task

 Bringing in the New Year:

Get everyone onto the floor 2 minutes before the new year – build up the tension by sounding excited and encouraging

Play BIG BEN CHIMES  – the new year starts on the first BONG not the start of the track!  (if you are using the video this is automatic)

If you are working with a band they may announce “Happy New Year” – check who is actually doing this -  if it’s you then announce after the first BONG!

Fade down the BIG BEN CHIMES  at an appropriate time – there is no need to play all 12,  however, you can have them still chiming in the background

If the band is assuming responsibility your job is done, however, if you are responsible then play The Bells - Auld Lang Syne (you can miss out the start a little) followed by:

IMPORTANT NOTE:   if you have a PIPER working in the room you will need to accommodate them – try to discuss what they are going to do and when they are doing it – are they playing after you (or the band) and will they  play after the chimes or is it later,     

PIPERS ARE NOTORIOUSLY THE UNPLANNABLE ELEMENT OF THE EVENT

A toast to the new year – get all to raise a glass to the Old Year and another to the New Year – wish then all the best for the new year

Again if you are in charge( and if appropriate) you should play 500 miles then perhaps a Gay Gordon’s and possibly a Dashing White Sergeant immediately after the formalities

You can then return to your play list

Be prepared to act positively for anything that happens to force change to the plan and note what goes well or was tricky then return to Bobby.    Each year we can refine the plan for the following year
